The employer applies for your entry permit, then converts it to a residence visa after you arrive, complete a medical test and register your Emirates ID. Expect two to six weeks end to end. The Golden Visa breaks that dependency by granting five or ten years of residence without a sponsor.

Residency & legal framework

Permanent residency

There is no permanent residence in the ordinary sense. The Golden Visa is the closest equivalent: five or ten years, renewable, self-sponsored, and it survives losing your job — which the standard employment visa does not.

Citizenship

Naturalisation was opened in 2021 to a narrow group — investors, doctors, scientists, inventors and creative talent — by nomination only. It is not a pathway most residents can plan for, and applicants generally retain their original nationality.

Legal rights

Golden Visa holders sponsor themselves and are not tied to an employer.
Standard employment visas end when the job does, with a grace period to find another.
Family sponsorship requires a minimum salary, typically AED 4,000–10,000 a month.

Degree recognition

Degree attestation by your ministries and the UAE embassy is required before a work visa is issued — start it before you resign. Health professionals license through DHA (Dubai), DoH (Abu Dhabi) or MOHAP; teachers need KHDA approval; engineers register with the Society of Engineers.
