Legal Immigration to Spain in 2026: Every Route, With the Current Numbers

August 2026

Verification notice: every figure here was checked on 22 August 2026. Spain's income thresholds are pegged to two indices that move independently — the minimum wage (SMI) and the IPREM benchmark. Confirm the figure in force on the day you file.

Spain in 2026: what actually changed

Three changes over the past eighteen months have reshaped how you get into Spain, and one of them will save you money immediately.

The Golden Visa is gone. Organic Law 1/2025 ended the property-investor route on 3 April 2025. Any agency still advertising Spanish residency in exchange for a EUR 500,000 property purchase is selling something that no longer exists in law. If you take one thing from this guide, take that.

Regularisation got a year shorter. The new Immigration Regulation (Royal Decree 1155/2024, in force since 20 May 2025) cut the continuous-residence requirement for arraigo social and arraigo sociolaboral from three years to two, restructured arraigo into five distinct routes, and extended initial permits to one year with four-year renewals.

The nomad threshold went up. Royal Decree 126/2026 raised the minimum wage 3.1% to EUR 1,221 per month across fourteen payments, which pushes the Digital Nomad Visa income requirement to EUR 2,849 per month.

One thing did not change, and it matters just as much: naturalisation still takes ten years of legal residence for nationals of Ghana, Kenya, the UAE and New Zealand. The famous two-year route applies only to citizens of Latin American countries, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal.

The main legal routes

1) Digital Nomad Visa — Visado de Teletrabajo Internacional

The most-searched Spanish route of 2026, created by Law 28/2022, the "Startup Law".

Requirement2026 figure
Monthly income (main applicant)EUR 2,849 (200% of the minimum wage)
First family member+EUR 916 per month (75% of SMI)
Each additional member+EUR 305 per month (25% of SMI)
Source of incomeAt least 80% from outside Spain
Employer's ageTrading for at least one year
Your tenureAt least three months with that employer
QualificationA degree, or three years of professional experience
Health coverFull coverage valid in Spain
Police clearanceFrom every country you lived in over the last five years

The strategic point most guides miss: there are two doors, not one.

  • At a consulate abroad, you get a one-year visa and renew from inside Spain.
  • From inside Spain as a lawful visitor, through the UGE-CE unit, you get a three-year residence permit straight away, renewable for two more, decided in roughly 20 working days, with positive administrative silence.

The second door is faster and lasts longer, but it assumes you can enter Spain lawfully first. In practice that suits New Zealand and UAE nationals, who are visa-exempt for short stays. Ghanaian and Kenyan applicants normally use the consular route, because entering at all requires a visa issued in advance.

Tax: you may elect the special regime — commonly called the Beckham Law — and pay a flat 24% on income up to EUR 600,000 for six years, instead of a progressive scale reaching 47%.

2) Non-Lucrative Visa — Residencia No Lucrativa

For retirees and anyone living on passive income: pensions, rent, investments or savings.

Requirement2026 figure
Annual income (main applicant)EUR 28,800 — EUR 2,400 a month (400% of IPREM)
Each additional member+EUR 7,200 a year (EUR 600 a month)
IPREM 2026EUR 600 a month — frozen since 2023
Health coverPrivate, from a Spanish-licensed insurer, with no co-payment
ValidityOne year, then two-year renewals

The constraint that catches people out: this permit does not allow you to work — and that includes remote work for a foreign employer. If you work remotely, you need the nomad route. Conflating the two is a common reason for refusal, and a more common reason for a renewal to fail later.

On the insurance: the "no co-payment" rule disqualifies most cheap international travel policies. You need a policy from an insurer licensed in Spain with cover equivalent to the public system.

3) Arraigo — regularisation after two years

For people already living in Spain. After the 2025 reform:

RouteResidence requiredCore condition
Arraigo socialTwo years continuousA job offer or sufficient means, plus social ties
Arraigo sociolaboralTwo yearsEvidence of a prior employment relationship
Arraigo socioformativoTwo yearsEnrolment in accredited vocational training
Arraigo familiarCase by caseFamily ties to a Spanish national
Arraigo laboralCase by caseEvidence of undeclared work

Decisions are due within three months, and here administrative silence is negative — no answer means an implied refusal you can appeal, not an approval.

4) Employer-sponsored work permit — Cuenta Ajena

The conventional route: a contract with a Spanish employer, subject to a labour-market test unless the occupation appears on the quarterly Catálogo de Ocupaciones de Difícil Cobertura, which is dominated by maritime, health and technical roles. Check in-demand jobs in Spain before negotiating, and measure the offer against the cost of living in Madrid.

🇬🇭 Ghana — applying in Accra

  • Application centre: Spain contracts BLS International in some countries and VFS Global in others, and these contracts have changed more than once. Confirm the current provider on the Spanish embassy's own site before booking — an appointment with the wrong provider costs you the slot and the fee.
  • Police certificate: issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Ghana Police headquarters in Accra, typically two to four weeks. Ask explicitly for the international-use version.
  • Legalisation: available sources disagree on whether Ghana has joined the Apostille Convention, so assume the traditional chain: notary → Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration → Spanish consular section. Check the HCCH status table first; the difference between the two paths is weeks and fees.
  • Translation: every non-Spanish document needs a sworn translation (traductor jurado) recognised by the Spanish foreign ministry. Ordinary local translations are rejected.

🇰🇪 Kenya — applying in Nairobi

  • Police certificate: the Certificate of Good Conduct from the DCI, requested through eCitizen with fingerprints taken at a DCI office.
  • Bank statement rules: the statement is what actually proves your income. In practice: six consecutive months, stamped by the branch, with a covering letter from the bank stating the account number, holder and balance. App-generated PDFs without a stamp are routinely refused.
  • Degree authentication: recognition runs through the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) and, for university awards, the Commission for University Education (CUE), then legalisation via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs.
  • For regulated professions — medicine, nursing, engineering, teaching — Spain additionally requires homologación or equivalencia from the education ministry, a separate process that can take months. Start it in parallel with the visa, not after.

🇦🇪 United Arab Emirates — applying where you live, not where you are from

  • Residence permit validity: consulates generally require your UAE residence to be valid for at least three months (some ask six) beyond your intended departure. A residence permit about to expire usually means the mission declines jurisdiction.
  • No-objection certificate: a letter from your employer on letterhead stating job title, salary, start date and consent to travel. Self-employed applicants substitute the trade licence and memorandum of association.
  • Bank evidence: six months of stamped statements from a UAE bank plus a salary certificate. Missions look at deposit regularity rather than the closing balance; a large lump sum deposited days before filing raises questions instead of settling them.
  • Attestation: personal documents need UAE MOFA attestation followed by the Spanish consulate.
  • UAE nationals enter Schengen without a short-stay visa, but long-stay residence still requires a national (D) visa obtained in advance. The exemption does not substitute for it.

🇳🇿 New Zealand — a strong passport, with a hard limit

  • Short stays: visa-free for 90 days in any 180.
  • The limit that matters: visa-free entry does not convert into residence. Unlike Germany, Spain requires a national (D) visa obtained abroad for most routes. The one practical exception is the UGE-CE nomad route, which accepts applications filed from inside Spain during a lawful stay.
  • Apostille: New Zealand is a Hague member, so documents are legalised with a single apostille from the Department of Internal Affairs rather than a consular chain.
  • Working Holiday: open to applicants aged 18–30 for up to twelve months under an annual quota. Excellent for testing the market, but it does not always count toward the residence years that lead to permanent residency — verify before building a long-term plan on it.
  • EES: the biometric Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at every Schengen external border since 10 April 2026. Passports are no longer stamped by hand; fingerprints and a facial image are recorded, and the 90-day count is now automatic and exact.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to get a Spanish visa in 2026?

If you work remotely and earn EUR 2,849 a month or more, the Digital Nomad Visa is the fastest route and grants the longest permit. If you have passive income and will not work, the Non-Lucrative Visa needs EUR 2,400 a month. There is no investment route any more: the Golden Visa was abolished on 3 April 2025.

Do I need to speak Spanish to get residency?

No. Neither the Digital Nomad Visa nor the Non-Lucrative Visa sets a language requirement. Spanish is only tested when you apply for citizenship, through the DELE A2 and CCSE exams.

What is the minimum income for a Spanish visa in 2026?

EUR 2,849 per month for the Digital Nomad Visa, which is 200% of the minimum wage. EUR 2,400 per month for the Non-Lucrative Visa, which is 400% of the IPREM index. Add EUR 916 for your first dependent on the nomad route, or EUR 600 on the non-lucrative route.

What is the approval rate for Spanish visas?

Spain does not publish approval rates for long-stay national visas. Only short-stay Schengen refusals are published: the global average was 14.8% in 2024, and above 45% for applications filed in Ghana. On the long-stay routes, refusals are usually administrative rather than personal — income below the threshold, an insurance policy with a co-payment, or documents that were never legalised.

How long does the application take?

Four to eight weeks at a consulate. Around 20 working days if you apply from inside Spain through the UGE-CE large-business unit, where administrative silence is positive: no answer within the deadline counts in your favour.
